The Poppy Festival honors the “Poppy Lady”, Moina Michael, born in Good Hope in 1869.
Moina Michael used the red corn poppy as a symbol to honor and raise funds for fallen WWI veterans.
During her teaching career, which included teaching disabled veterans, she began to realize the financial support they needed.
As a result, she committed herself to raise funds by selling artificial poppies.
Her endeavor became so popular that the American Legion adopted the poppy as its symbol and honored Moina Michael with its highest award. Today, her tradition continues through many individuals, organizations, and festivals – one of which is the Good Hope Poppy Festival.
Profits from the 2026 Poppy Festival will be awarded to local veteran causes, chosen by a committee and Good Hope Together, ensuring that every dollar makes a meaningful impact in our community. Past recipients include:
2025: $5,000 to The Moina Michael Poppy Project
2024: $6,400 to The Moina Michael Poppy Project & Good Hope Together
2023: $5,300 to The Moina Michael Poppy Project & Good Hope Together
2018: $8,000 to Walton Co. Veteran Memorial & Moina Michael Poppy Project.
2017: $8,000 to Walton Co. Veteran Memorial & Moina Michael Poppy Project
2016: $5,165 to Walton Co. Veteran Memorial & Moina Michael Poppy Project
2015: $4,250 to local veteran groups.
2014: $3,400 to local veteran groups.
